If you would like help moving your data from one server to another, our technical specialists will be glad to assist. Open a ticket with our Technical Support department to arrange it.

What we need from you

To transfer files and databases, please provide:

  1. which server the data should be moved from, and which server to;
  2. current access credentials for both servers;
  3. what exactly needs to be transferred;
  4. the names of the databases and the credentials for them;
  5. when the transfer should be carried out.

The last point matters more than it might seem. A transfer usually involves a period during which the data is changing on one server and being copied to the other, so it is best scheduled for a time when your site or application is least used.

Free disk space

A correct transfer requires free disk space on the server: if the disk fills up during copying, the process fails partway through and errors occur.

Please check the available space in advance and free some up if necessary. Alternatively, our Backup Stor service can be used as intermediate storage — and afterwards as somewhere to keep your backups. See Can I display images stored on Backup Stor on my website? for what it is intended for.

Before the transfer

Please make your own backup of the data before the work starts. We take care during a transfer, but a copy of your own is the only thing that protects you completely — from a failure, and from a mistake on either side.

Do not delete anything from the old server until you have checked that everything works on the new one. Keep the old server running for a while after the transfer, so that you can go back to it if something turns out to be missing.

If you are not sure what needs to be transferred or how best to plan the work, describe your setup in a ticket and we will suggest an approach.
