Administrator and user privileges in KeyHelp Print

KeyHelp has two types of account — administrators and users — with different sets of privileges. Which items appear in the main menu depends on which type you are logged in as, so if a section described in a guide is missing, the account type is the first thing to check.

Administrators

An administrator account has access to every function of the panel, including everything that affects the server as a whole: the PHP interpreters installed, the web server configuration, server-wide backups and the panel's own settings.

Administrators also manage the users: creating and editing accounts, setting their limits, and granting or withdrawing privileges such as SSH access, the ability to create backups, PHP limits, PHP-FPM settings and the creation of domains. See Creating a user in KeyHelp.

In the user list, the panel's main administrator account is marked with its own icon.

Users

A user account covers everything within its own account and nothing outside it: domains and subdomains, email addresses and mailboxes, FTP accounts, databases, and the files of its own websites. This is the level at which day-to-day work on a website happens.

A user cannot see or affect other users' data, and cannot change server-wide settings. That is the point of the separation: if a site is compromised, the damage is confined to that account.

Which account should you use?

Use a user account for routine work on your sites, even if you have administrator access. Working as an administrator by habit means that a mistake made in a hurry — deleting the wrong thing, changing a server-wide setting — has a much wider reach than it needs to.

Reserve the administrator account for what genuinely requires it: installing PHP versions, changing web server settings, creating accounts and server-level backups.

If a function is not available to you

Some things are deliberately restricted to administrators, and some are granted per user. If you cannot find a function described in one of our guides, check whether it requires administrator access, and whether the relevant privilege is enabled for your account.

If you need a privilege that you do not have, open a ticket from your client area telling us what you are trying to do — we can either enable it or tell you why it is restricted.
