Mailboxes are created and managed in the Mail section of the panel. Before you can create one, a mail domain must exist — see Creating a mail domain in ISPmanager.
Creating a mailbox
- Go to the Mail section.
- Click Create mailbox on the toolbar.
- Fill in the fields described below.
- Save the changes. The mailbox is ready for use immediately.
The fields you need
- Name — the part of the address before the @ sign.
- Domain — the mail domain the mailbox belongs to.
- Password and Confirm — the mailbox password. This is a separate password from your panel login.
Optional settings
- Aliases — additional names for the same mailbox within the domain. Mail sent to an alias arrives in the main mailbox. Useful for addresses such as info@ and office@ that one person reads.
- Send a copy to — addresses that receive copies of incoming mail.
- Do not save incoming emails — with forwarding configured, incoming mail is not kept in this mailbox. Use with care: if the forwarding address stops working, the mail is lost rather than waiting on the server.
- Max. size — the disk space limit for the mailbox. When it is reached, incoming messages are rejected, so set a realistic value or leave it blank for no limit.
- Number of mails sent per hour — the sending limit. Leave blank to use the limit set at user or server level. Note that a value of 0 or 1 stops mail being sent at all.
- Enable Greylisting and Enable SpamAssassin — spam protection for this mailbox, available if it is enabled for the mail domain. Turning them off for a mailbox adds it to the whitelist, so its mail is no longer filtered.
Getting the settings for a mail client
Rather than working out the settings yourself, take them from the panel: in the list of mailboxes, use the mail client settings action for the address. The panel shows the incoming and outgoing servers, the ports and the protocols.
Always choose the encrypted options — IMAP on port 993, SMTP on port 587 or 465. The unencrypted ports transmit your password in clear text, and port 25 is in any case often blocked by internet providers.
Managing existing mailboxes
The list in the Mail section offers, for each address:
- Edit — change the password, limits and other settings.
- Disable — mail is no longer delivered and the mailbox cannot be logged into. Senders receive an error. Useful when someone leaves and their mail should stop without the address being deleted.
- Clear contents — empties the mailbox.
- Delete — removes the mailbox.
Deleting or clearing a mailbox is irreversible: if no backup exists, the messages cannot be recovered. Take a backup first, or disable the mailbox instead of deleting it if you may need the mail later.
If mail is not arriving
Check first whether the mailbox has reached its size limit — a full mailbox rejects incoming mail. Then check that the mailbox is not disabled, and that the domain's MX records point to this server.
If mail still does not arrive, open a ticket from your client area with the address concerned and, if you have it, the error returned to the sender.
